FileXpress Platform Server Agent version 7.1
Summary

This technical note describes the FileXpress Platform Server agent and outlines the new features available in the version 7.1 release.

This technical note covers the following topics:

Introduction

FileXpress Platform Server Agent is a light-weight, Java-based version of the full-featured FileXpress Platform Server. FileXpress Platform Server Agent enables secure, controlled, high-volume file transfer activity on platforms that support a Java JDK. With FileXpress Platform Server Agent you can transfer critical business files between applications, integrate data from a network of stores or branch locations, or send large files to an offshore data center. Each installed FileXpress Platform Server Agent enables cross-platform transfers and ensures that all files are tracked and approved before leaving the server. A full range of encryption algorithms, built-in security, and authentication options ensure that data is completely secure at every stage in the process.

FileXpress Platform Server Agent is perfect for platforms not currently supported by the full-featured FileXpress Platform Server such as Mac OS X and HP OpenVMS.

Key benefits in FileXpress Platform Server Agent include:

  • No file size limitations
  • Guaranteed delivery
  • Post processing of data
  • Secure file transfer with AES or DES encryption
  • Integrates seamlessly with enterprise applications

New Features in 7.1

The following features are new in version 7.1 of FileXpress Platform Server Agent.

Perl script for Directory Named Initiation (DNI)

The Perl DNI script enables you to detect the existence of a file within a directory, and transfer each file in the directory to a target system. With Perl DNI you can:

  • Use regular Expressions to filter files to be transferred.
  • Limit the days/times that files are scanned for transfer.

Encrypted Password

You now have the option to encrypt passwords so they are no longer shown in clear text on the command line or in transfer templates with the new cfencrypt command. All passwords are encrypted using AES 256.

Supported Platforms and System Requirements

Supported Platforms

FileXpress Platform Server Agent 7.1 can be installed on any platform supported by the vendor that is capable of supporting the required Java JDK, for example:

  • OpenVMS Alpha (note that VAX platforms do not support Java, a required component)
  • Macintosh Leopard and Snow Leopard

Note: Support is provided by Attachmate only for the operating system vendor’s generally supported release versions. Once the operating system goes into extended support mode, or the vendor no longer supports a version, it will cease to be supported by Attachmate Technical Support.

Java Development Kit (JDK)

The appropriate 32-bit or 64-bit Java JDK version 1.6 or higher must be installed to the server. The Oracle Java JDK can be downloaded using the following link:

Java Policy Files

Along with the Java JDK applied to your system, you also need Java’s policy files for 256-bit encryption for the version of the Java JDK you have installed. To download these files from Oracle, use the link above and search for “Java Cryptography Extension.” If you do not see the policy files for the version of Java you are using, look for “Previous Releases”.

Note: For Mac OS X systems running Leopard v10.5 or Snow Leopard v10.6, the JDK is installed by default. No additional files are needed.

Minimum Hardware

Hardware recommendations for running Platform Server Agent are:

  • 2 GB of memory
  • 1 GB of disk space
  • An appropriate amount of additional local storage is recommended for file transfer data

As with any enterprise application, changes may need to be made to firewalls and other security systems in a production environment.

License Key

Platform Server Agent requires a license key for full functionality. (The Platform Server Agent installs by default with a 60-day trial license key.) The license key is included in your Attachmate Order Confirmation and Delivery email.
