Reflection X Advantage
Summary

This technical note describes how to install a newer version of Reflection X Advantage on a Windows system after you have edited rxmgr.alp, rxmgrdomains.alp, or any other *.alp file. It also describes changes in how the installer handles these files starting with version 5.0.906.

Upgrades Now Overwrite Modified *.alp Files

The way the installer handles modified *.alp files changed starting with version 5.0 Update 1 (identified as version 5.0.906 in Help > About), provided with Reflection X 2014 and Reflection Pro 2014 R1 Update 1 (released May 2014).

Starting with version 5.0.906, if you install a newer version of Reflection X Advantage over modified *.alp files, the Windows installer will replace your modified *.alp files with new default. This ensures that X Manager and X Manager for Domains will start correctly, but overrides your edits. Note the following:

  • If you changed the database location as described in Technical Note 2561 and update to version 5.0.906 or later, you will need to edit the *.alp files to access your existing databases.
  • If you had previously reduced the memory size on a Windows install by editing the -Xmx setting as described in Technical Note 2657, you may not need to modify the setting after upgrading. The default value was lowered in version 5.0. (The default value is -Xmx900m starting with version 5.0 and -Xmx1024m in version 4.2 and earlier.)

Prior to version 5.0.906, the installer does not replace modified *.alp files with newer files that are part of the new version. In this case, if the newer version of Reflection X Advantage requires an updated rxmgr.alp or rxmgrdomains.alp file and an older version is still present in the Program Files folder, X Manager or X Manager for Domains may fail to start, or you may see an “Unexpected error” message. For information on how to prevent this, see How to Install Newer Versions After Modifying Rxmgr.alp or Rxmgrdomains.alp. For information about how to repair your installation if you have already installed over a modified *.alp file, see Repairing Reflection X Advantage If You Have an Incorrect Version of Rxmgr.alp or Rxmgrdomains.alp.

How to Install Newer Versions After Modifying Rxmgr.alp or Rxmgrdomains.alp

Follow these steps when you upgrade a system with modified *.alp files:

  1. Locate the edited rxmgr.alp or rxmgrdomains.alp file in the Reflection X Advantage installation folder.
  2. Copy your modified *.alp to a new location. You will need to re-edit the new *.alp file, and you can use this copy of your modified file as a reference when you customize the newer file.
  3. Delete your modified *.alp files from the installation folder. (This step is optional if you are updating to version 5.0.906 or later.)
  4. Install the newer version.
  5. Remove the read-only attribute from the new *.alp files, restore any customizations you made, save the files and restore the read-only attribute

Repairing Reflection X Advantage If You Have an Incorrect Version of Rxmgr.alp or Rxmgrdomains.alp

Follow these steps if you have already installed a version earlier than 5.0.906 over an edited *.alp file and can’t start X Manager or X Manager for Domains.

  1. Locate the edited *.alp file in the Reflection X Advantage installation folder.
  2. Copy your modified *.alp file to a new location. You will need to re-edit the new rxmgr.alp or rxmgrdomains.alp file and you can use this copy of your modified file as a reference when you customize the newer file.
  3. Delete your modified *.alp from the installation folder.
  4. Repair your installation.
  5. Remove the read-only attribute from the repaired *.alp file, restore you customization, save it and restore the read-only attribute.
