Reflection X Advantage version 2.1
Summary
This technical note lists the new features and resolved issues in Reflection X Advantage 2.1.
Note the following:
- Reflection X Advantage is a multi-platform X server that extends the functionality originally offered by Reflection X 14.0. Like Reflection X 14.0, Reflection X Advantage supports multi-window mode, a local window manager, and copy/paste.
- Reflection X Advantage can stand alone or coexist on a workstation with Reflection X 14.0. For more information, see Technical Note 2236.
- The Reflection X Advantage installer detects your operating system locale and installs the product in French, German, Japanese, or English. If a language other than one of these is detected, the product installs in English.
- For a list of new features introduced in Reflection X Advantage 2.0, see Technical Note 2417.
New Features
- Platform support for Windows 7.
- Create desktop shortcuts to launch Reflection X clients and sessions.
If you are running on Windows, you can now create desktop shortcuts to launch sessions or individual clients. This feature is available for both X Manager and X Manager for Domains. Use one of the following approaches:
- Right-click a session definition > Create shortcut.
- Right-click a client definition > Create shortcut > Select the session to use with this client > OK.
- Use a Windows system tray icon to access Reflection X windows.
You can now run Reflection X in the background and access it from the Windows system tray. This feature is available for both X Manager and X Manager for Domains running on Windows.
Use the new menu item: File > Minimize to tray.
- Launch Reflection X applications from the applications menu on UNIX systems.
When you install on UNIX systems with CDE, GNOME and KDE desktops, the installer now creates an Attachmate Reflection group in the applications menu. (In version 2.0, the installer created desktop shortcuts. These desktop shortcuts are not created starting with version 2.1.)
- New command line options.
Starting with version 2.1, new options are available for launching Reflection X Manager and Reflection X Manager for Domains from the command line. See Technical Note 2468 for details.
- Automatic IP address handling for Reflection X domains.
If you are running in domain mode through a VPN, setting the IP address for computers running X Manager for Domains or the Administrative Console is now handled automatically. (This feature was previously available only for the standalone X Manager.)
The JRE version installed with Reflection X Advantage has been updated. On Windows, Linux, and Solaris, the installed version is JRE 1.6 update 13. On HP-UX, the installed version is JRE 1.6 update 4.
Note the following:
- The JRE installed by Reflection X Advantage is used only by Reflection X Advantage.
- On Mac OS X, Reflection X Advantage does not install a JRE, but instead uses the JRE installed by Apple.
- Render extension update.
Render extension support has been upgraded to v0.9.
Resolved Issues
- This release provides numerous performance improvements, which provide faster response times with a variety of client applications including: pirut, eclipse, Gnome, KDE, OpenOffice, Firefox, GIMP, and the NetBeans IDE.
- Mozilla Firefox launches correctly. This resolves an issue that caused the session to terminate when the render extension is enabled (the default) and Mozilla has not previously been launched successfully (therefore, the $HOME/.mozilla directory has not yet been created).
- Eclipse now runs correctly in a desktop session that was launched using the startkde command.
- All Latin-2 characters are now mapped correctly.
- Reflection now correctly draws OpenGL applications on Solaris 9.
- Title bar text now displays correctly when client applications are running on the desktop on a Japanese Windows system.
- Issues reported when using the CDE Calendar application have been resolved.
- Text copied from an X application when ‘Selection bound to clipboard’ is set to PRIMARY now reliably includes all selected text. This fixes an issue seen with some X clients.
- Reflection X Manager no longer closes with an unexpected application error when displaying certain X client applications (such as the User Registration dialog and Solaris Management Console) running on Solaris 9. This fixes an issue that was seen occasionally when running Reflection X on Vista Ultimate.
- ListFonts requests no longer result in warning messages, including "Missing charsets in String to FontSet conversion" and "Cannot convert string x to type FontSet".
- Reflection no longer displays a login screen after you log out from an XDMCP desktop session.
