Reflection X Advantage
Summary

This technical note describes how to make a connection using Reflection X Advantage in Standalone mode.

Reflection X Advantage Modes

To meet your specific needs, Reflection X Advantage operates in two modes:

Standalone Mode: This mode is provided in one application—X Manager.

For current Reflection X users, the features provided by Reflection X Advantage in Standalone mode is similar to that of previous versions of Reflection X. Users connect directly to a client application on a host to run X sessions. From X Manager, users can customize settings and monitor session status. They can also configure their sessions to address a variety of needs.

Domain Mode: This mode consists of two applications—X Manager for Domains and the Administrative Console—and requires one or more Reflection X domains.

Domain mode offers all the functionality of Standalone mode and complements that power with additional features, such as centralized administration, domain authentication services, load balancing, and flexible, instant access to sessions with suspend/resume.

This technical note walks through making an X session connection using Reflection X Advantage in Standalone mode. For information about using Reflection X Advantage in Domain mode, see the Evaluation Guide on the product documentation page, http://support.attachmate.com/manuals/rxa.html.

Creating an XDMCP Session

This example shows how to create and start an XDMCP session connection.

  1. Open the Reflection X Manager.
  2. In the left pane, click the green plus sign (+) next to X Servers. A new X server definition displays in the right pane.
  3. In the Name field, enter a name for this server definition. The name you enter is saved automatically.
  1. In the left pane, click the "(Untitled Session)" under My Sessions. The "(Untitled Session)" definition is displayed in the right pane.
  2. In the Session name field, enter a name for your session. The name you enter is saved automatically.
  3. In the Use X server field, select the X server you created in step 3.
  4. In the On session start/reset drop-down list, select Initiate XDMCP.
  5. In the Type field, select Direct.
  6. In the Host name field, enter the name of the host to which you want to connect.
  7. Click the start icon (green arrow on the toolbar) to launch your session.

Creating an X Client Session

This example shows how to create and start a session that connects to an X client. There are three steps involved in starting an X client session:

  • Create an X client definition
  • Create an X server definition
  • Create a My Session definition to combine the client and server definitions

Create an X Client Definition

The X client definition establishes all of the information relevant to starting a client, such as host name, login details, and startup command line.

  1. Open the Reflection X Manager.
  2. In the left pane, click the green plus sign (+) next to X Clients. A new X client definition is displayed in the right pane.
  3. In the name field, enter a name for this client definition. The name you enter is saved automatically.
  4. In the Host name field, enter the name of the host where the X client is located.
  5. Select the Host type from the drop-down list.
  6. Select a Connection method from the drop-down list.
  7. Enter your User name (and password if applicable).
  8. In the Command drop-down list, select a startup command.

Create an X Server Definition

A server definition sets the global defaults, such as fonts, colors, and windowing options that will be used for all X clients using this definition. If you have already created an X server definition, you can skip this section. Follow these steps to create a new X server definition.

  1. In the left pane of Reflection X Manager, click the green plus sign (+) next to X Servers. A new X server definition is displayed in the right pane.
  2. In the Name field, enter a name for this server definition. The name you enter is saved automatically.

Create a My Sessions Definition

A session definition is a combination of session settings, an X server definition, and optionally, one or more client definitions. When a session definition is launched, a session is created.

  1. In Reflection X Manager, under My Sessions on the left, select (Untitled Session).
  2. In the Session name field, enter a name for your session. The name you enter is saved automatically.
  3. In the Use X server field, select the X server you previously created.
  4. In the On session start/reset drop-down list, select Start X clients.
  5. Click the green plus sign (+) next to X Clients.
  1. Select an X client, and then click OK. You may add multiple clients.
  2. Click the start icon (green arrow on the toolbar) to launch your session.
