Summary

Product help may not display when running on Microsoft Windows Vista. This technical note describes the symptom and solution.

Symptom

When attempting to access the product help, you may see the following message:

Figure 1. Windows Vista: Figure 1. Windows Vista: "Why can't I get Help from this program?"

Explanation

Attachmate products (listed in the Applies To section above) provide application help in the WinHelp (*.hlp) format. Beginning with Windows Vista, the Windows Help program (WinHlp32.exe) is no longer included with Windows. Microsoft prohibits redistribution of the Windows Help program.

Solution

To view the help files, you can download and install WinHlp32.exe from the Microsoft Download Center. This download supports 32-bit and 64-bit Vista editions.

Download the program at http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkID=82148.

For more information, see the Microsoft article at http://support.microsoft.com/kb/917607.

Enabling Macros

After you have installed the Windows Help support, you will be able to view the application help; however, some macros may be disabled in Vista by default. You can view the help without enabling these macros, although you may see the following error message:

There was a problem running the macro. (1037)

You can enable full macro support by editing the Windows registry. Note: Use extreme caution when editing the Windows registry.

  1. Create the following new subkey.

On 32-bit Windows:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\WinHelp

On 64-bit Windows:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\WOW6432node\Microsoft\WinHelp
  1. In the new subkey, add a DWORD value named AllowProgrammaticMacros.
  2. Set the value for AllowProgrammaticMacros to 1.

Note: Alternatively, this functionality can be enabled by creating and importing a .reg file.

For more information, see the Microsoft article at http://support.microsoft.com/kb/917607.
