Reflection X Advantage
Summary
This technical note describes the capabilities delivered in Reflection X Advantage. Reflection X Advantage includes PC X server features not available in Reflection X. This technical note describes the new features and functions of Reflection X Advantage so that you can determine when it's best to use Reflection X Advantage.
Reflection X Advantage and Reflection X
Both Reflection X Advantage and Reflection X are stand-alone PC X Servers. However, you can install and run both products on the same machine (within the terms of the Reflection X Advantage license agreement) because both applications run independently of each other. See Technical Note 2236 for more information.
In addition to the features provided as a stand-alone PC X server, Reflection X Advantage offers features and functions that are new to the Reflection X product line.
Reflection X Advantage Features and Functions
Reflection X Advantage offers new features related to remote X application access, multi-platform support, suspending and resuming X application user interface, session persistence, and collaboration.
New Features
- Centralized managementset up, monitor, and manage Reflection X Advantage domains, including load balancing
- Domain Authentication Services
- Support for negative coordinates
- Support for RENDER, DAMAGE, and XFIXES extensions (X11R7.1 specification compliance)
- Multi-locale keyboard
- SSH, FIPS 140.2, GLX*, and OpenGL support
* Note that due to limitations in the GLX specifications, neither session transfer nor sharing is supported for sessions running GLX client applications.
New Functionality
- Access X applications from remote sites over high-latency or low-bandwidth networks without incurring a huge performance penalty using a Reflection X Advantage domain or compression technology or both.
- Suspend the user interface to an X application, allowing it to continue running on the UNIX host, even after shutting down the workstation that launched the X application.
- Resume a suspended X application user interface.
- Transfer the user interface of a suspended X application to another workstation.
- Share the user interface of an X application with one or more users.
- Run X applications from a variety of workstation platforms including Windows XP/Vista, Mac OS X, Linux, and UNIX.
Reflection X Advantage Requirements
Note the following requirements for Reflection X Advantage:
- Reflection X Advantage requires Java 1.6 (a Java 1.6 JRE is packaged with the product) and a platform capable of supporting a Sun distribution of the Java 1.6 JRE.
- Many of the new features in Reflection X Advantage are supported by use of a distributed execution model. To enable this model, Reflection X Advantage implements a proprietary Domain environment that supports the management of servers and user accounts.
- Some features, such as Session Transfer and Session Persistence through a workstation restart, require that Reflection X Advantage be installed on one or more middle-tier servers (may be the same host running the X client application).
