Public Key Generated by PuTTYgen Does Not Work with F-Secure SSH
Technical Note 1912
Last Reviewed 09-May-2005
Applies To
F-Secure SSH Server for Windows version 5.2
Summary

After using PuTTYgen to generate a public key, the key may not work correctly with F-Secure SSH Server for Windows. This technical note explains how to resolve this problem.

Server Debug Log

If you are unable to use a public key generated by PuTTYgen, view the server's debug log and look for an entry similar to the following:

1936:Ssh2AuthPubKeyServer: unable to read the administrator's public key C:\Documents and Settings/administrator/.ssh2/mykey.pub

Resolution

If the "unable to read administrator's public key" entry is present in your server debug log, use one of the following methods to resolve this problem.

  • Recommended: Upgrade the F-Secure SSH Server for Windows to the latest version, which is 6.1. Note: Beginning with version 6.0, the F-Secure SSH product line has a new name: Reflection for Secure IT.

For information about upgrading, see Technical Note 1901

  • Save the public key in UNIX format. The problem occurs when the public key file is saved in DOS format.
