Upgrading to NFS Client Version 13.0 or Higher
Technical Note 1846
Last Reviewed 19-Oct-2006
Applies To
Reflection NFS Client version 13.0 or higher
Summary

This technical note provides steps for upgrading from an earlier version of Reflection NFS Client to version 13.0 or higher.

Upgrade Options

Before upgrading your NFS installation, review the following Reflection NFS Client upgrading options to determine which approach is best for your environment.

Important Upgrading Notes:

  • Different uninstall options maintain different existing configuration information. Read the option details before deciding which option to use.
  • If you use Msiexec.exe to install NFS from the command line, do not use the /q or /qn switch; these switches are not supported for the NFS Client. (The /qb, /qr, and /qf switchs are supported.)
  • Because the NFS Client runs as a service in memory, the older version is not completely removed until you shut down your system. Due to limitations in the Microsoft Windows device installer, attempting to install the newer version when the older version is still present will not succeed, and may cause problems.
  • Do not use Microsoft's Active Directory to deploy the NFS Client. Active Directory cannot be configured to perform the required reboot.
  • At the end of the uninstall, there will be a long pause. This is normal. When the uninstall is complete you are prompted to restart Windows. Do not skip this step.

Option I—Manually Uninstall the NFS Client before Installing the New Version

This procedure removes NFS Client settings you configured using the older version. Drives you mapped to NFS servers remain, but any drive-specific NFS settings you configured are lost.

  1. Use the Windows Add or Remove Programs utility to uninstall your current version. You will be prompted to restart Windows when this is done.
  2. Restart your system. Do not skip this step.
  3. Install version 13.0 or higher from the product CD or from an Administrative Installation point. You will be prompted to restart your computer when this is done. The installation is not complete until you do this.

Option II—Upgrade Using the Workstation Installation Option

This procedure preserves your NFS Client settings and all mapped drives.

  1. Launch the Reflection installer, and select the Workstation Install option. The installer detects the presence of an older version of Reflection, stores your settings, and then uninstalls the older version. You will be prompted to restart Windows when this is done.
  2. Restart your system. Do not skip this step.
  3. Launch the installer again and select the Workstation Install option. Version 13.0 or higher is installed on your system and the installer migrates your prior version settings. You will be prompted to restart your computer when this is done. The installation is not complete until you do this.

Option III—Upgrade Using an Administrative Installation

Administrators can use this technique to distribute the NFS Client from a central network location. This procedure preserves NFS settings and mapped drives on end-user computers. Users should understand the importance of rebooting after the uninstall step.

  1. Create an administrative installation. You can use the Administrative Install option provided by the Reflection installer, or use Reflection Customization Manager.
  2. Point end-users to Setup.exe at the administrative installation point, or have them launch a shortcut you created using the Reflection Customization Manager.
  3. The installer detects the presence of an older version of Reflection, stores NFS Client settings on the end-user's computer, and then uninstalls the older version.
  4. When the uninstall is complete, users will be prompted to restart Windows. When prompted, users must restart their systems. They should be instructed not to skip this step.
  5. Once Windows has been restarted, users should be instruction to start the Reflection installation again (as in step 2). Reflection NFS will be installed. When the installation is complete, users will be prompted to restart their computers. This restart can be postponed, but installation is not complete until after the reboot.

Option IV—Upgrade Using Systems Management Server (SMS)

If you use SMS, you can use this technique to create an automated installation for your users that automatically reboots and restarts the installer when needed. This procedure preserves NFS settings and mapped drives on end-user computers. Reflection provides the necessary files for use with SMS.

  1. Create an administrative installation. You can use the Administrative Install option provided by the Reflection installer, or use Reflection Customization Manager. )In the next steps, you will use SMS to configure a package for the NFS Client using the package definition file (*.sms) that is created at the administrative installation point.)
  2. Launch SMS.
  3. Bring up the Properties of either the Per-system attended or the Per-system unattended Program in the NFS package definition file.
  4. Click the Advanced tab and select Run another program first.
  5. Select the package for the older NFS version from the Package drop-down list.
  6. Select Uninstall from the Program drop-down list, and then click OK.

Note: The Uninstall program was created using the package definition file found in the administrative installation point for your earlier NFS version, or is one that you created manually.

  1. Select the Package for the previous NFS version and bring up the Properties of its Uninstall Program.
  2. Click the Advanced tab and check Run another program first.
  3. On the Package drop-down list, select 13.0 (or higher) NFS Package.
  4. Select Save NFS Settings from the Program drop-down list.
  5. Select Run this program every time (this ensures that the NFS settings are saved prior to uninstalling), and then click OK.
  6. Advertise the modified NFS installation program.
