Media Application Server (MAS) Support in Reflection X
Technical Note 1797
Last Reviewed 31-May-2006
Applies To
Reflection X version 12.0 through 13.x
Summary

Media Application Server (MAS) is a network-independent sound and multimedia server that is an ongoing project of Shiman and Associates (SAI). The MAS feature is incorporated into Reflection X versions 12.0 through 13.x to enable quality audio presentation of real time multimedia data from Linux/UNIX servers onto the Windows desktop. This technical note describes how to install the MAS feature in Reflection X.

Prerequisites for Installing MAS in Reflection X

Reflection X does not install the MAS feature by default. Before installing this feature, note the following requirements.

  • Support for the MAS feature is provided only for Microsoft Windows XP and Windows 2000. This feature will not install on Windows NT 4.0.
  • DirectX version 8.1 or higher must be installed on the machine prior to MAS installation. If DirectX is not present or an earlier version is detected, the MAS feature is not available during Reflection installation.
  • To play audio files in MP3 format an Mpeg decoder is required. You can download a decoder from Media Application Server at http://www.mediaapplicationserver.net/WRQ-Support.

Installing the MAS Feature

The MAS feature can be installed when Reflection X is first installed, or it can be added later. Follow the steps below to install the MAS feature.

Note: To install MAS support, you will need the Reflection X product CD or access to the server image.

  1. Access the Reflection X Select Features dialog box.

If you have already installed Reflection:

    1. In Windows Control Panel, click Add/Remove Programs > WRQ Reflection X (or WRQ Reflection Suite for X), and then click Change.
    2. In the Application Maintenance dialog box, select Modify and click Next.

If you have not yet installed Reflection:

    1. Place the Reflection X product CD in the CD-ROM drive. Windows Autorun will automatically start the Reflection installation program on most systems.
    2. In each dialog box, choose an option as required, and then click Next until you reach the Destination Folder dialog box.
    3. In the Destination Folder dialog box, select Custom, and then click Next.
  1. In the Select Features dialog box, expand WRQ Reflection > X Window Server > Tools and Samples > MAS. Right-click the MAS feature and choose an installation type from the context menu that appears.

Note: The MAS option is not displayed if DirectX version 8.1 or higher is not detected.
