Reflection and Verastream products cannot be installed directly onto devices running Windows CE (including Pocket PC devices); however, several solutions are available that allow users to access their host systems from within a Windows CE environment. These options include running Windows-based Reflection products in a Microsoft Windows Terminal Services (WTS) or WTS with Citrix MetaFrame environment, or providing browser-based solutions using Reflection for the Web or Verastream. This technical note provides a brief overview of how our products fit into these environments.
The following list of solutions enable users to access their host systems from within a Windows CE environment. (Each of these solutions is described in more detail in following sections.)
Note: The details provided in this document are for informational purposes only. Reflection products are not designed for or formally tested on the Windows CE (Pocket PC) platform at this time. Please keep in mind that no patches or updates will be issued to resolve problems related to this operating system.
The aspect ratio of the display screens used on many Windows CE (Pocket PC and handheld PC) devices is different than that of a standard monitor, which can result in difficulties when displaying text, scrolling, or panning within Reflection Windows-based products or Reflection for the Web.
This problem can be resolved by changing the display orientation of the device from portrait to landscape. Some devices provide this functionality; other devices may require that you obtain a third-party utility. Various utilities that provide this functionality can be found by doing a web search for "Pocket PC sideways landscape" (or a similar search string).
All Reflection Windows-based products can run in a Windows Terminal Server (WTS) or WTS with Citrix MetaFrame environment; however, specific components and system services included in some Reflection products are not supported. For full details on which components and versions are supported, see Technical Note 1626.
Windows Terminal Services and the WTS Client are provided by Microsoft. In a network environment where WTS is installed and configured, Reflection products can be installed on the WTS and accessed by devices running the current WTS Client. To access Reflection from a Windows CE device in this environment, install Terminal Services Client on the Windows CE device.
For additional information, see the following resources.
Citrix MetaFrame is an add-on that provides supplemental functionality for Windows Terminal Services (such as wider client platform support, audio, and enterprise load balancing).
In a network environment where Citrix MetaFrame is installed and configured, Reflection products can be installed on the Citrix Server and accessed by devices running the current Citrix ICA Client. To access Reflection from a Windows CE device in this environment, install the Terminal Server thin client, Terminal (diskless), with built-in Citrix ICA Client on the Windows CE device.

Two of our products can provide browser-based host access in a Windows CE environment: Reflection for the Web and Verastream.
Reflection for the Web delivers web-based terminal emulation to IBM, HP, UNIX, and OpenVMS host applications through a web browser. It is a Java based solution, requiring a web browser that provides a Java Virtual Machine (VM) with full Java Runtime Environment version 1.1 (JRE 1.1) support.
NSIcom (http://www.nsicom.com) has released a Java Virtual Machine (JVM) for Windows CE called "CrEme." This JVM may provide sufficient functionality to support Reflection for the Web on the Windows CE platform; however, please note that at the time of publication, we have only performed very limited in-house testing with this product (using CrEme version 3.2).

Verastream Host Integrator provides access to screen-based IBM, HP, UNIX, and OpenVMS applications through a standard web browser, and requires that no additional software be installed on the Windows CE device.
Using the Verastream tools, you can quickly and automatically convert terminal screens to web pages on the fly, modify the screens to simplify usability, or abstract the host data (from multiple screens or hosts) to build a new web application that is intuitive and efficient for users. Because this solution is entirely HTML based, the web application can be constructed with the dimensions of the Windows CE devices in mind; thus, avoiding the screen dimension problems previously discussed.
