Situation

This technical note explains how to troubleshoot when a file transfer fails with the No Host Response error message. This error message indicates that the host file transfer program could not be executed.

Resolution

Confirm Your Connection to the Host

You must be connected and logged on to the host computer before you can transfer files with the WRQ/Reflection protocol.

Check Your Host Startup Command

To confirm that the correct host Startup Command is selected for your host, follow these steps.

In Reflection 2011 or Reflection 2008:

  1. Connect to your host.
  2. In the quick access toolbar, click the Document Settings icon.
  3. Under File Transfer, click Configure File Transfer Settings to open the Transfer Settings dialog box.
  4. Click the WRQ tab. In Host System Options, confirm that the host Startup Command is correct for your host.
  5. If the Startup Command is not correct, click the Protocol tab and select the appropriate host in the Preset Configurations field. Click OK.

In Reflection 13.0 – 14.x:

  1. Connect to your host.
  2. From the File menu, select Transfer.
  3. Click Setup to open the File Transfer Setup dialog box.
  4. Click the WRQ tab. In Host System Options, confirm that the host Startup Command is correct for your host.
  5. If the Startup Command is not correct, click the Protocol tab and select the appropriate host in the Preset Configurations field. Click OK.

Confirm the Startup Command Syntax

Check the syntax of the host Startup Command. If you are transferring files to a UNIX host, make sure the startup string is all lower case. If you are transferring files to a VMS host, try removing RUN from the Startup Command.

Upload the File Transfer Host Program

At the host system prompt, enter the host startup command exactly as it appears in the File Transfer Setup dialog. You should see a string of (#@#@#@), which means that the file transfer program is working properly. Press Enter several times to exit the file transfer program and return to the system prompt.

If you receive an error message regarding the execution of the host program, you probably have not uploaded the host program software. The host file transfer program must be uploaded to the host to use the WRQ/Reflection file transfer protocol. If you are upgrading from an earlier version of Reflection, be sure to upload the latest version of the file transfer host program. For more information on uploading the file transfer host program, see KB 7021482.

Confirm HP 3000 Host Prompt

If you are using Reflection for HP to transfer files to an HP 3000 and you are able to run the host command startup from the colon prompt but you still get "No Host Response," you may not be getting DC1 characters from the HP 3000. Follow these steps to confirm you are getting DC1 characters:

  1. From the colon prompt, press Alt-M (modes keys) and press F7 to turn on Display Functions.
  2. Press Enter a few times. Following the colon, you should see a DC1 and a CR. (The DC1 will appear as a D1 or a left-pointing triangle.)

If the DC1 is not there, it is being stopped by some intermediary device between your PC and the HP 3000 (such as an error-checking modem or an X.25 network). These devices are doing XON/XOFF flow control of their own. You must either disable this, or configure Reflection for no DC1 characters.

Configuring Reflection for Windows for No DC1 Characters

Click File > File Transfer Setup. Click the Protocol tab and in Preset configurations, double-click To HP 3000 over X.25.

Use Troubleshooting Presets or Predefined Settings

Many problems can be solved by trying one of the predefined presets or predefined settings. In the Transfer Settings dialog box (Reflection 2008) or from File Transfer Setup (Reflection), click the Protocol tab. In Preset configurations, select the Troubleshooting option for the host to which you are connecting.
