Symptoms

Generate a valid software key

Determine Unisys mainframe group performance level

Purpose
FileXpress, DataXpress, and DATABridge are custom-keyed by Attachmate for each customer's mainframe. In order to successfully complete your annual software renewal, two primary Unisys Mainframe identification numbers are required: serial and type. These numbers are needed to determine your mainframe Group and build your product. If the numbers are incorrectly received or incorrectly coded, the mainframe will display an error message and the software will not run.

NOTE: FileXpress-ST software is not keyed. However, the Group still needs to be determined.

Fix

Identifying the System

In order to determine the mainframe identification, the most accurate description of your mainframe is the marketing style listed on the Unisys sales order form.

If the sales order form is not available, you may attempt to obtain this number by performing a "WM" command at the Unisys mainframe Operator Display Terminal (ODT). Depending on the mainframe, running the WM command on the host does not always return enough details to complete your order. But a successful WM command will return, among other information, the following two or three lines, which are required for Attachmate to create a valid software key.

System serial number:
System type:
Processor:

System serial number
The serial number is typically a four-digit number. It may be fewer, but will not be greater than five digits.

NOTE: The Unisys Mainframe will most likely have an identification label on the outside of the machine that may display the hardware 10 digit serial number. This is NOT the serial number needed for a key.

System type
The System type is also called the "Software Style Number" or "ITI" Model Number. Two possible mainframe model numbers are as follows:

NX5621-21
NX5622-22

NOTE: The numbers following the dash are crucial to ensuring that you are properly licensed.

Processor
Reporting the Processor information is optional, but if present, it may be useful for generating a key.

ClearPath LX
On a ClearPath LX mainframe, both the Unisys mainframe serial number and type may be successfully obtained by performing a "WM" command at your Unisys mainframe ODT. No additional information is needed.

ClearPath NX
On a ClearPath NX mainframe, the displayed "System type" will NOT give enough of the necessary information. You must find the number on your Unisys mainframe paperwork or annual MCP license renewal document.
