General questions about SDK and opening a port through the firewall

Technical Note 1.0.9496968.3392017
Created 27-Sep-2001

Applies To
e-Vantage SDK 2.2.3

Cisco Router

PIX

Symptoms

General questions about SDK and opening a port through the firewall

Punch a nice clean secure hole (consisting of a range of IP's) through the firewall for SDK

Fix

It's pretty easy to open a hole in the firewall although dangerous. PIX is a specific firewall (brand name Cisco uses) but you would open it with an access list on a router, I would think PIX has a better user interface. I would also tighten it up way more than that one is.
What it is saying is ANY machine's IP traffic from the x.x.x.x subnet can access ANY machine on the x.x.x.x network. You can get a lot more specific specifying valid port numbers that are allowed in, specific machines and only specific protocols TCP or UDP instead of any IP traffic.
